Disorders of the Chest

Book Description
The spectrum of occupational and environmental diseases has changed markedly in recent years. New industrial processes have led to the production and use of a wide range of chemicals, metals, and alloys, an increasing number of which have been reported to cause interstitial lung disease in exposed workers. Thus, while the workforce in coal mining and asbestos handling has decreased, new groups of workers are at risk of exposure to agents potentially responsible for pneumoconiosis. This well-illustrated book, written by internationally acclaimed experts, provides a comprehensive approach to modern imaging of environmental and occupational diseases of the chest. The first part of the book addresses the basic knowledge required to understand imaging in this context, while the second focuses on the imaging results achieved in a variety of specific disorders. There is particular emphasis on thin-section computed tomography since this technique facilitates the detection of early subclinical abnormalities.

Imaging of Orbital and Visual Pathway

Imaging of Orbital and Visual Pathway Pathology (Medical Radiology / Diagnostic Imaging)
by Müller-Forell, W. S.
Publication: New York, London Springer Science & Business Media, 2006

Book Description
This is one of the first books to deal with imaging of pathology of the entire visual system. It is divided into two parts, general and special. In the general part, the most important basics of modern imaging methods are discussed, but with less emphasis on the physical background than in purely neuro-/radiological textbooks. Chapters are devoted to the meticulous presentation of imaging anatomy of the orbit and intracranial visual pathway. The latest knowledge on the indication, technique, and results of functional MR imaging is presented. Visual system impairment in the pediatric age group is also discussed. The special part of the book provides detailed descriptions of the symptoms and clinical and imaging findings in individual patients with orbital and intracranial pathologies. This book is specifically designed to be of value not only to neuroradiologists but also to ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons, oto-/rhino-laryngol ogists, and neurologists who require more detailed information on these special diseases.

The first part outlines the clinical presentations of stroke and discusses the diagnostic efficacy and therapeutic impact of MR imaging. The second and third parts form the core of the volume, and are based on a novel approach in that the topic is presented from two very different viewpoints. Part 2 provides a detailed presentation of the distinguishing features of stroke from the radiologist' s perspective. By contrast, part 3 addresses the needs of the clinician, documenting specific stroke syndromes and their correlates on MR imaging. The overall aim has been to create a well-illustrated volume with broad appeal that links pathology, radiology and stroke medicine in an informative manner.

Brain Tumor Pathology

List Price: $129.00
Hardcover: 272 pages
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (April 11, 2006)
Language: English
ISBN: 1402039972

Book Description
This book is not a treatise on brain tumor pathology and nosography. It has been conceived as a help to pathologists, neuropathologists and neuro-oncologists in confronting everyday problems arising in the diagnostics of brain tumors. Today, because of scientific advances in clinical diagnosis brain tumors are operated earlier, when they are still of reduced dimensions, and with new techniques and more frequently they undergo biopsy procedures. As a consequence, surgical samples for diagnosis are of a smaller size. On the other hand, the recourse to therapies ever more selective require more and more precise identification of tumor types and grades and quite often reliance must be placed on a limited number of cells, as tumor morphological patterns are no longer available. The ever greater precision leads to an increased risk of a flawed diagnosis. The book aims to illustrate the pitfalls most frequently encountered today in the practical activity of diagnosis and also of prognosis. The initial chapters cover the distinction between infiltrating tumors and normal nervous tissue, between diffuse astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma and the identification of the malignant variant of some tumor types. Moreover, in the pathology of brain tumors, some biological processes are active which show a development over the course of time, such that in surgical samples they cannot be recognized as a whole, but only from the occurrence of limited and partial aspects. Invasion modalities, angiogenesis and apoptosis fall in this category and are discussed not in an exhaustive manner, but as stages or phases of the processes identified in the tissue. The figures do not seek to illustrate the characteristic aspects of the tumors, but only the points under discussion. This book is the result of many years of personal experience in the diagnosis of brain tumors as well as of discussions with neurosurgeons and neuro-oncologists and it aspires to contribute to solving emerging everyday problems.

Fungal Allergy and Pathogenicity

Absctact:
Expert scientific and clinical investigators present proven human cell culture techniques applicable to tissue samples taken from a wide variety of organs, particularly those prone to pathological change. They describe in clear, step-by-step instructions the special requirements for successfully culturing such human cells as T-cells, trophoblast cells, renal cells, natural killer cells, endothelial cells, neurons, epithelial cells, pituitary cells, and more. The protocols eliminate much of the chore of adapting techniques initially developed for animal cell culture systems or the time spent in hunting down potentially useful techniques buried in the details of research papers, or even in books largely devoted to animal cell culture. They allow researchers to use successfully high quality in vitro cultures as models to explore the disease process.

Parasitology continues to benefit from taking an evolutionary approach to its study. Tree construction, character-mapping, tree-based evolutionary interpretation, and other developments in molecular and morphological phylogenetics have had a profound influence and have shed new light on the very nature of host-parasite relations and their coevolution. Life cycle complexity, parasite ecology and the origins and evolution of parasitism itself are all underpinned by an understanding of phylogeny.

This volume aims to bring together a range of articles that exemplifies the phylogenetic approach as applied to various disciplines within parasitology and as applied by parasitologists. Unified by the use of phylogenies, this book tackles a wide variety of parasite-specific biological problems across a diverse range of taxa.

Conduct and Oppositional Defiant Disorders

The latter decades of the 20th century saw a steady rise in the incidence of antisocial behaviour in youth. Possible direct consequences aside, such behaviour is predictive of chronic emotional, educational and vocational impairment that is associated with hundreds of millions of dollars in costs to overtaxed mental health, social services, special education and juvenile justice systems. This volume offers a comprehensive overview of all the major aspects of conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in children and adolescents. The book is organized into three sections. The first section summarizes classification and assessment, epidemiology and comorbidity, as well as course and outcome. The second section examines factors that put children and adolescents at risk to develop CD and ODD: contextual, familial/genetic, and neuropsychological and neuroendocrine. The third section presents numerous empirically supported approaches to prevention and treatment. An epilogue reviews recent progress and unresolved questions, and suggests needs for future research. Special attention is devoted to gender and developmental pathways in etiology, symptom _expression, courses and outcomes.

Textbook of Physical Diagnosis

Book Description
The new 4th Edition of this one-of-a-kind, humanistic text has been thoroughly updated to reflect the most current standards of physical diagnosis. Its core philosophy approaches the patient as a person suffering from disease, rather than an entity in which disease manifests. All chapters have been reviewed and revised, with an all-new chapter on nutrition that shows readers how to apply nutritional principles to the practice of medicine. New color images replace many old black-and-white images, and more than 200 NEW color photographs of pathological conditions enhance this Edition.
